Letter to Deborah Pryce
February 21, 2007
The Honorable Deborah Pryce
United States House of Representatives
320 Cannon HOB
Washington, D.C 20515
Dear Congresswoman Pryce:
I write to voice my support for your co-sponsoring of HR 82. The bill would amend the Social Security Act to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions penalize some public employees by cutting or taking away completely Social Security benefits they or their spouse earned, simply because the public employee earned retirement benefits in both the Social Security System and in a public retirement system.
Many of us worked in non-public employee jobs prior to our work in various aspects of government. We paid into the Social Security system during those years long enough to qualify for Social Security benefits. It's essentially unfair to take away benefits that were earned prior to public employment.
Thank you for supporting this legislation. I hope that, given the bipartisan support for the resolution, it can be approved by both the House and Senate in this session of Congress.
Sincerely,
Letter to Pat Tiberi
