What's Really Happening

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of February 8, 2006

MEMBERS REJECT TENTATIVE AGREEMENT

In voting February 6 and 7, CSEA members rejected the tentative agreement reached in mediated negotiations January 23.

The Board took no action on the tentative agreement at its January 26 meeting, and the administration has released no information on prospective Board action as of this writing. The administration has already put into effect some of the tentative agreements contained in the proposed Agreement.

In meetings January 31 and February 1, members appeared satisfied with the non-economic parts of the tentative agreement. However, many had concerns and questions about the dramatic increase in health care costs as well as the administration's lack of progress toward implementing a salary structure that will allow faculty to progress upward in their respective pay ranges.

The Executive Committee and other Association leaders are meeting to review the situation, share feedback from members, and discuss future directions. What's Really Happening will provide updated information to you early next week. In the meantime, share your thoughts and concerns with your Association Representative.

LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

CSEA will sponsor up to five CSEA members interested in attending the Regional Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 25, from 9:30 AM to 3 PM at The Conference Center at North Pointe (on Route 23 between Worthington and Delaware).

The conference, sponsored by Central OEA/NEA and the Central Ohio Regional Coordinating Council, will include sessions on bargaining issues, current legal issues, an introduction to bargaining, communication skills, and organizing. Whether you are an officer, an Association representative, or a member interested in building skills and becoming more involved in CSEA, this conference is an excellent opportunity.

You probably received this information at home in your monthly Commuique from Central OEA/NEA, but the deadline is approaching and we are interested in supporting any member who wishes to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about a range of issues that are critical to building a more effective local Association.

Contact Greg Goodhart (x5431) or Steve Abbott (x5096) no later than Friday morning, February 10, if you want to attend.

TIME FOR MORE SECURITY?

Faculty members and staff in departments across campus have reported the theft of several purses from unsecured offices and desks over the past few weeks. Thefts in Nestor, Davidson, and Aquinas Halls have many people taking extra precautions by locking offices and desks. Make sure your valuables are secure to prevent opportunistic crime.
