What's Really Happening

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of January 24, 2006

The following is a Joint Statement released yesterday by the Columbus State Education Association and Columbus State Community College :

"In mediation with the State Employment Relations Board, Columbus State Community College and the Columbus State Education Association today reached tentative agreement regarding the remaining issues in bargaining.

"The Columbus State Education Association and Columbus State Community College have agreed to a total communications blackout on negotiations until February 7, 2006 , in order to allow the College Trustees and the Association members to consider or ratify the bargaining agreement."

A summary of the Tentative Agreement and a schedule for meetings and ratification voting days have been sent to all members of the bargaining unit by campus email.

Meetings to discuss the document will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, January 31 and February 1, at 3 PM in a location yet to be confirmed. Voting to ratify the contract will take place Monday and Tuesday, February 6 and 7, from 10 AM to 4 PM in the conference room of the Mathematics Department, 4 th floor of Davidson Hall.

We hope that you will join your colleagues when faculty return to the Board of Trustees meeting Thursday, January 26, to determine what progress the Board has made on looking into questions about the College's management.

Nearly 80 faculty, students, and staff attended the Board of Trustees meeting November 17, 2005 , to inform the Board of continuing concerns about the operation of the College. These issues included delays in the initial paychecks each quarter for adjunct faculty, the administration's increasing cash reserves, hiring of administrators who lack the qualifications required in their job descriptions, and the decline in employee morale over the past several years.

In a statement released following the meeting, the Board said, "[W]e plan to follow up with those and take appropriate action."

Please join us Thursday at 6 PM in the Franklin Hall Board Room to hear how the Board intends to address CSCC's management problems.

Elections for the College Promotion & Tenure Appeals Committee will take place (tomorrow) Wednesday and Thursday, January 25 and 26, in the Human Resources Office from 8 AM to 4 PM each day.
