What's Really Happening

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of August 30. 2005

INFORMATIONAL PICKETING

On Wednesday and Thursday, August 31-September 1, faculty will walk informational picket lines to take their concerns about negotiations and related issues to students and the central Ohio community. Picketing and distribution of flyers will take place from 8-10 AM and from 4:30-6:30 PM both days along Cleveland Avenue, Mt. Vernon Avenue, and Spring Street. (There has been some lack of clarity about the time for the afternoon pickets; note the starting/ending times above.)

Please show up in the Davidson Hall lobby 15 minutes before the beginning of your shift. Bring a colleague.

We appreciate the strong support faculty have shown for this action, an effort to demonstrate our commitment to a fair contract. Regardless of whether you signed up in advance to participate, we encourage both members and non-members of CSEA to join us, at either time on either day. You'll be welcome and have the opportunity to share in this act of faculty solidarity.

Administration communications about these pickets may have given some the wrong impression by stating that picketing may not occur "on campus." These pickets are legal, non-disruptive activities that will take place on public sidewalks along public streets. Although picketing will not take place in the plaza or within buildings, faculty will greet students and other employees at various points where they will enter the campus.

Your participation in these pickets and other actions (including notice by nearly 50 lead instructors and program coordinators that they will not accept their reassigned roles Autumn Quarter) shows that we prefer to reach an agreement short of more serious actions. The more faculty act NOW in non-confrontational ways, the less likely it is that we will face more serious decisions later. If you have hesitated before, the time to act is now. Join us.

Wednesday volunteers should plan (and dress) for rain, especially in the morning. Some type of waterproof cover or folder for flyers will be helpful. It will take more than the tail end of Hurricane Katrina to dampen our spirits.
