The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of December 5, 2008

PROVOST SEARCH COMMITTEE

With the pending departure of Provost Dr. Kay Adkins, the CSEA Executive Committee has named Dr. David Hockenbery one of the faculty representatives for this committee. The other faculty will be selected by the President.

In light of the fact that the President’s contract expires on December 31, 2009, and that she has indicated that she would not seek an extension of this contract, CSEA President Darrell Minor has requested that the President consider naming an interim Provost, rather than hire a new Provost. Many faculty have expressed their concerns that the pool of applicants for the position of Provost would not be a very high caliber, knowing that a new college President may wish to bring in new senior administrators into the leadership of the College.

Given the Ohio Board of Regents’ developing work on the University System of Ohio, additional initiatives still being created by the Chancellor, and the likelihood that Columbus State will be preparing for transition to a semester system within a few years, a new President and a new Provost will need to work closely together to shape these critical initiatives for the College. We believe it is in the best long-term interests of the college that the new President have significant input into the selection of the College’s chief academic officer.

We will keep you posted on any response from the President regarding this request.

CHANGES TO 403(b) ACCOUNTS MAY AFFECT YOU

Due to changes in federal law, some companies that previously offered 403(b) accounts to faculty will no longer be eligible to do so after December 31. If you have a 403(b) account with one of these companies, you should have received a letter from them informing you of this. Your options are to either roll-over your savings to one of the eligible providers or to keep your funds in your current account; if you choose the latter option, you will no longer be able to contribute to that account.

PANDEMIC FLU AWARENESS

An increasing number of health experts are warning about the likelihood of a pandemic flu outbreak in the near future. There have been several instances of such outbreaks in the nation’s history, and experts are cautioning that we are overdue for another. CSEA has obtained 64 copies of a DVD from the Ohio Department of Health titled "Pandemic Flu: What You Can Do" that are free for the asking. The short (approximately 12 minutes) video gives some practical steps that individuals and families can be taking to be as prepared as possible should such an outbreak occur. If you would like a copy of this DVD, contact John Nedel, faculty representative on the College Safety Committee, to obtain one. John can be contacted at jnedel@cscc.edu, or at x3857.

NETWORKING FOR MINORITY MEMBERS OF CSEA

Central OEA/NEA will sponsor “Celebrating Central’s Diversity: An Evening of Networking and Dining” on January 13, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus at 5 p.m. The event offers minority members of OEA locals to connect with Central OEA/NEA officers, leaders and other minority members and learn more about the benefits of active membership within Central OEA.

Participants in the networking event are invited to stay for the Columbus Education Association’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award Dinner. This annual event showcases an individual or group honored for efforts that further civil rights. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m., with dinner at 6:45 p.m.

Interested members can register for the event at http://www.centraloeanea.org/reg by December 10.

FACULTY CONTRACT RESULTS IN BENEFIT TO STAFF

In our new contract, your Bargaining Team was able to gain an increase in the number of unused sick days that the College will purchase upon retirement, with an additional 5 days added to the existing 40. At its last meeting, the Board of Trustees extended this same benefit to all other college employees as well. This marks an overall increase from 30 days to 45 days of unused sick leave that are purchased upon retirement that CSEA has negotiated on behalf of faculty, and which the Board subsequently extended to all other employees as well.
