The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of October 21, 2008

CSEA MEETING

A CSEA meeting for all full-time faculty will be held on Thursday, October 30, from 2:30-4:30 PM in FR 104.

The agenda will include first review of a proposed amendment to the CSEA Constitution to expand the number of Association Representatives, discussion of Peer Review Teams and changes to the Promotion & Tenure handbook, and election of President, Secretary, Treasurer and 9 Association Representatives. (More information about nominations appears below.) Refreshments will be available.

Also, we ask you to bring to the meeting donations of disposable cameras, puzzle books, coloring books, and puzzle books for older children. This is part of CSEA’s support for “Patches of Light,” a partnership between the Ohio Education Association and Children’s Hospital to provide children at the hospital with a means of self-expression during their treatment and recovery.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE SEEKS CANDIDATES

This year’s CSEA elections are approaching, and we encourage you to consider running for leadership positions up for election this year: President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 9 Association Representative positions. The Nominating Committee is recruiting and considering candidates.

With the establishing of fair-share fees in the new contract and more faculty choosing to join the Association, many opportunities for union leadership activity—and College service toward promotion—are available. CSEA’s work and new initiatives are shaped by the needs and insights of its members. Make your views speak through your faculty Association by serving in a leadership role.

If you are interested in standing for an elective position or participating in Nominating Committee or other parliamentary work to help conduct Association elections, contact Kevin James at x5008.

COUGAR NEWS LIVES!

If you're like us, you probably miss seeing the latest edition of Cougar News appearing in the blue racks around campus every Wednesday. Newspaper production is, by its very nature, an energy-intensive process that burns fossil fuels and kills trees--hardly the stuff of sustained usability, and certainly not in keeping with Columbus State's green initiatives.

But Cougar News is thriving on the Web at CougarNews.net. The site has registered more than 2,000 hits in its first month with virtually no promotion at all. Considering its print circulation was only 5,000 issues each week, with many of those issues left untouched on racks, that's an incredible number to reach so quickly.

If you're just now hearing about CougarNews.net, or if you haven't visited CougarNews.net recently, you don't know what you're missing. Check it out.

COMMUNITY SERVICE IDEAS

CSEA is willing to work with faculty on community service activities. Even though CSEA periodically initiates participation in such off-campus events, we are always open to suggestions of other opportunities for the Association to contribute its efforts to the larger community.

Faculty currently engaged in other community service activities are encouraged to inform Barbara Smith-Allen (x5433) in the Institutional Advancement office so the College is aware of all the ways CSCC employees are contributing to the larger community we serve.

FACULTY FANFARE

Writers for The Beacon, CSEA’s quarterly publication that highlights the work and accomplishments of full-time faculty, are always looking for good news. Forward information about your own or colleagues’ presentations, awards, honors, and activities to Ingrid Emch, editor of The Beacon, at NH 420, x5824 oriemch@cscc.edu .
