The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of August 27, 2008

FAIR SHARE AND PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS IN THE COMING YEAR

All full-time faculty (bargaining unit members) will receive information via email and campus mailboxes in the next week explaining dues payments and fair-share fees for the coming year. Payment options depend on your Association dues status.

  • Past members who approved continuing payroll deduction don’t have to do anything.
  • Past members who paid their dues in full each year will receive a new membership form and a request to approve continuing payroll deduction.

Faculty who have not previously been members have 2 options:

  • Become a CSEA member, fill out a membership form and decide whether to (1) pay membership dues for the 2008-2009 year in full before the end of September, or (2) approve regular payroll deduction that spreads dues payments over the 18 pays of the academic year (October 15-June 30).
  • Remain a non-member and have the fair-share fee deducted in 12 payments between January 15 and June 30.
We urge all current non-members to join CSEA and begin the benefits of Association membership. In addition to $1 million in liability insurance in actions related to your professional work, you will be able to vote in union elections and on contract ratifications, benefit from discounts on hundreds of products and services through the Ohio Education Association, have access to OEA’s Legal Services Plan, and become an active part of your faculty Association. Look for the forthcoming mail and email notifications about this important change in payroll action.

VOLUNTEERS FOR COLLEGE SERVICE

CSEA is seeking volunteers to serve on the following committees:

  • a committee that will develop recommendations on how to improve In-Service Days to produce meaningful faculty professional development
  • a committee that will review processes related to disruptive behavior, potential crisis situations, and other issues of classroom and campus safety

Interested CSEA members should contact President Darrell Minor at dminor@cscc.edu

Also, CSEA encourages you to volunteer for Taste the Future on Tuesday, September 16. This annual gala raises more than $200,000 each year to fund student scholarships. Yes, it takes place during our break week, but if you are in town, consider helping out. Guests at this important event regularly remark on employees’ primary role in making the event a showcase of our Hospitality Management Program and its links to local restaurants.

To check out volunteer opportunities and sign up to volunteer, go tohttp://www.tastethefuture.com/volunteer.html and download the form. Forms can be submitted by email to the Development Foundation’s Elissa Schneider at eschneid@cscc.edu.

AUTUMN CLASS ENROLLMENTS

An enrollment of 7 or more students is sufficient for a class to be compensated at full rate, and the new Agreement provides for new rates of pay for lower numbers that will be handled as independent studies. Furthermore, there remain exceptions that allow for classes with 6 or fewer students to be paid at the full rate, such as allowing students to complete a program of study, to establish new course offerings, and other academic reasons. Such exceptions require the approval of the chairperson and the dean. At the beginning of Autumn Quarter, the final determination of class enrollment—and thus your compensation for a class for the quarter—will occur 48 hours after the class first meets.

If a class is near but not over the baseline of 7 students, faculty should closely monitor enrollment for that section at the beginning of the quarter. Faculty members will have the responsibility to inform their chairs of any change that raises enrollment to the baseline of 7 students. Faculty may wish to print out their own class rosters to demonstrate that the enrollment achieved 7 students within the 48-hour time period.

CSEA is working with Human Resources to develop a full explanation of this process. You will receive that document before the beginning of Autumn Quarter.

…AND ABOUT YOUR SUPPLEMENTAL CONTRACTS

It is essential that all faculty approve the online contract that is sent by email at the beginning of each quarter to cover any overload work (supplemental contract). Failure to do so creates substantial work for the staff person who administers these contracts (along with nearly a thousand adjunct faculty contracts). None of us likes having someone create unnecessary work for us; please do your part to avoid adding to someone else’s workload by responding to the email and approving your supplemental contract promptly.
