The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of October 23, 2006

CONVERSATION (IN-SERVICE) DAY ON WEDNESDAY

CSEA encourages all faculty to attend and participate actively in this Wednesday's In-Service Day, which will be held at the Ohio Center. The entire Conversation Day is devoted to work on AQIP, the process by which the College is preparing for renewal of its accreditation.

Many faculty devoted considerable time in September to filling out the AQIP survey and contributing their insights via written comments, despite survey deadlines that did not take into account faculty's absence during quarter break and their heavy workload at the beginning of Autumn Quarter.

We need to recognize that Conversation Day will entail highly structured processes designed to produce specific goals, and that these goals may not match those of individuals hoping to explore the issues raised in comments on the survey. Extensive discussion of various issues is unlikely. Nonetheless, faculty concerns about issues should not be minimized simply to achieve group harmony. We encourage all faculty to participate actively and honestly so that the day's outcomes reflect both what the College hopes to achieve and what it has not achieved since our last accreditation in 2000.

MORE FULL-TIME FACULTY = IMPROVED STUDENT GRADUATION RATES?

A recent study forthcoming in The Journal of Higher Education suggests that the ratio of full-time to part-time faculty at community colleges has a close relationship to student graduation rates.

A summary article from http://insidehighered.com/news/2006/10/16/parttimeappears at the end of this newsletter. We have also included as an attachment a PDF of the entire study.

Columbus State's ratio of full-time to part-time faculty was a major shortcoming cited in 2000 by the site visit committee of the College's accrediting body. Unfortunately, the ratio at CSCC has worsened in the past 6 years.

FULL PROFESSORS NEEDED FOR COLLEGE PROMOTION & TENURE COMMITTEE

The College Promotion & Tenure Committee needs self-nominations of full professors, one from the Arts & Sciences Division and one from the Career & Technical Programs Division this week. Sufficient faculty have applied to run for the at-large positions, but the committee needs a representative from each of the listed divisions.

As a result, the college-wide election for these and other positions, scheduled for this Friday, has been postponed until Friday, November 3 to allow for nominations to be submitted.

We strongly urge all full professors to consider running for these important posts. If these slots are not filled, faculty will forfeit a central aspect of faculty peer evaluation. With faculty in control of promotion and tenure committees at all levels, it is essential that senior faculty accept the responsibility of serving in this important role.

The self-nomination form is attached to this document. Deadline for applications is this Friday, October 27.

ASSOCIATION REPRESENTATIVE RUN-OFF ELECTION RESULTS

In balloting last Thursday and Friday, members elected Bob Mergel (Construction Science) as an Association Representative. He joins other new Association Representatives elected the pervious week: Steve Abbott, Judy Anderson, Liz Betzel, Mark Bocija, T.J. Duda, Ann Palazzo, Dona Reaser, Gilberto Serrano, and Kathy Struve.

Current and new Association Reps will meet in the coming week to elect 2 Senior Association Representatives, who will serve as members of the Executive Committee, to re-allocate responsibility for each representative's specific programs and/or departments, and to begin work on outreach activity.

We again thank everyone who stood for election to union offices. As a member organization, CSEA depends on committed individuals to contribute their efforts to Association work.

COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS

The Executive Committee recently has appointed CSEA representatives to a range of Association-administration committees.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Amy Brubaker (Human Resources Technology), James Stewart (Social & Behavioral Sciences), Beth McGrath (Computer Science), and Marc Lord (Biological & Physical Sciences). This committee will resume work developed during the first contract term on issues of intellectual property, particularly in the area of development of online course materials.

WORKLOAD LANGUAGE: Kevin James (Mathematics), Davie Litt (Sports & Fitness Management), and Melissa Luebben (Mathematics). This committee will convert into contract language the current Appendix to our work terms (the "Workload Model" developed when faculty workload was re-allocated in 2000 from 20 classroom contact hours to 16 contact hours, with 4 hours shifted to Mission & Learning Support activities).

CAMPUS FOOD SERVICE: Mary Ann Canter (Medical Services). This committee, chaired by the Vice President for Business & Administrative Services, is reviewing guidelines for campus food-service contracts.

The Executive Committee will later this week finalize appointments to the Faculty Appraisal Committee, which will complete work on processes developed as part of the revision of the first promotion/tenure processes completed during the last negotiations. We thank everyone who has agreed to serve in any capacity to represent faculty interests on these and other committees.
