The Word from CSEA

Columbus State Education Association Newsletter of July 31, 2006

IMPOSED TERMS TO BE AVAILABLE SOON

Since the Board imposed its Last/Best/Final Offer in February, we have awaited a final version of those terms. Since April, members of the Bargaining Team have been reviewing drafts provided by the College. Although we have not received a final version with all the corrections, we expect to have it within the next few weeks. At that time, we will post a copy on the Association web site (www.cseafaculty.org) and make hard copies available to all full-time faculty.

ALSO ON THE WEB SITE

The official letter from the CPA firm that conducted the no-confidence vote is posted on the CSEA web site. Marino & Company CPA tallied all votes received, including some that came in after the closing date for returns. Final results showed that, with 70% of full-time faculty voting, 85% expressed no confidence.

BUILDING BRIDGES

In an effort to improve communication between the administration and faculty, Dr. Moeller and CSEA President Steve Abbott have begun meeting on a monthly basis to discuss issues of common concern and explore ideas for addressing a range of issues. These include campus matters as well as state funding and related issues affecting state colleges and universities.

As a result of these discussions, CSEA will now be allowed to participate in new faculty orientation. Also, the College has joined most other state community colleges in contributing financial support to the Ohio Faculty Senate of Community and Technical Colleges. The Senate, made up of representatives from each institution, meets during the academic year to share information, conduct research, and serve as a two-year college faculty voice with the Ohio Board of Regents. We appreciate the President's support of the Ohio Faculty Senate.

AUTUMN CSEA ELECTIONS:
NOMINATING COMMITTEE SEEKS CANDIDATES

The Association's Nominating Committee for the autumn elections is seeking candidates for all leadership positions, including the addition of 8 new Association Representative positions.

The Executive Committee appointed the committee last week. Treasurer Greg Goodhart, who has served 2 terms and will not seek re-election, will chair the committee of Beth McGrath (Computer Science), Beth Barnett (Developmental Education), and Dr. Charlie Gallucci (Biological & Physical Sciences).

To compile a slate of candidates, the committee will seek out interested members and take recommendations from current leadership, as well as accept self-nominations from Association members. Any member can be nominated by completing a nomination form signed by 5 other members.

The offices of President, Secretary, and Treasurer are scheduled for election this year. However, the offices of Vice President and Parliamentarian will also be up for election to 1-year terms due to the retirement of VP Karl Rieppel (Computer Science) and the appointment of Parliamentarian Darrell Minor to fill Rieppel's unexpired term, which leaves the office of Parliamentarian open.

Eight new Associations Representatives will also be elected. Members will also elect a Senior Association Representative, who will serve as a member of the Executive Committee.

ASSOCIATION WORK = COLLEGE SERVICE

Faculty have the opportunity to serve both CSEA and the College by participating in service to the Association.

You are CSEA, and your talents have a place in the ongoing work of building an Association that serves faculty through advocacy, communications, participation in local and state organizations, membership and social functions. We hope you'll consider contributing your skills and effort to activity in your Association.
